AstraZeneca, a global leader in cancer research, is launching its own blockbuster cancer drug, esomeprazole magnesium.
Esomeprazole magnesium, the world’s fastest-growing prescription drug, was approved to market its generic form in the US in December. It is a brand-name version of Pfizer’s blockbuster drug Nexium, which had $1 billion in sales in the US in 2008.
The generic version of Nexium has now been sold in the US for nearly three years and is now available in many other countries. In the United States, the market is expected to reach $2 billion by the end of 2008.
“AstraZeneca is committed to ensuring that patients continue to receive effective cancer treatments and to increasing patient access to therapies that are not yet available to them,” said Dr. David Hensley, the company’s chief executive officer. “This new form of esomeprazole magnesium has been proven to be a game-changer for patients with advanced cancer, and is the first example of a new drug being launched which could significantly improve the lives of those affected.”
Esomeprazole magnesium, known generically as esomeprazole, was launched in the US in June 2010. It is a once-daily, once-patient, once-daily, once-daily and once-daily treatment for about 80,000 patients each year. It has a long-term safety record. The FDA approved the drug in the US in 2003 and in the European Union in August.
Esomeprazole magnesium is used for treating conditions such as abdominal pain, arthritis and osteoarthritis. It is also sometimes used off-label to treat nausea and vomiting, ulcers and acid reflux.
“Esomeprazole magnesium has been a game-changer for patients and their families,” Hensley said. “Esomeprazole magnesium is a first-line treatment for cancer and is considered a preferred treatment for patients who have not responded to standard chemotherapy and radiation therapy.”
In August, the US Food and Drug Administration approved esomeprazole magnesium to treat patients with stomach cancer who had had surgery or chemotherapy in the past. The drug is a once-daily, once-daily, once-daily treatment for about 80,000 patients each year.
Esomeprazole magnesium is available in a variety of forms and strengths, including tablets, capsules, suppositories and oral liquids. It is often used as a gastroprotective agent or anti-inflammatory agent.
Esomeprazole magnesium is a member of the group of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. The drug works by preventing the production of acid in the stomach.
Esomeprazole magnesium is used in the management of certain types of stomach cancers, such as gastric and duodenal ulcers and esophageal cancer. It is also used to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. The drug is used as part of a treatment regimen known as an acid-suppressive diet.
Esomeprazole magnesium is a second-generation, once-daily, once-daily and once-daily therapy for ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative duodenal ulcers. It is available in strengths of 50mg and 100mg capsules and is also available in various formulations. It is used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise.
Esomeprazole magnesium is also used to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and blood clots in patients at high risk of heart disease. It is also used off-label to treat nausea and vomiting.
The FDA approved esomeprazole magnesium to treat patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which the stomach lining breaks down and causes a narrowing of the esophagus.
